The Access Learning Program
ACCESS Learning is a program for students with exceptional learning needs within McNair's inclusive learning community. Students work toward goals specific to their Individual Education Plans building foundational skills that will support their learning in academic and elective subject classes and life outside of school.
Explicit Foundational Learning - A1
Students participate in hands on learning experiences within themed units that strengthen and build foundational skills. Students also work on assignments for their subject classes to support inclusive classroom learning. Participation in field trips is an important part of the program experience, allowing students to make connections to material, develop transit skills and foster relationships with their peers.
Explicit Transitional Learning - A2
Students in the 2nd level of the ACCESS program have more strategic content instruction to support inclusive curricular classes. Students also have the opportunity to participate in field trips, where they practice navigating their community and engage in trip planning. In addition, students will have the opportunity to work on strengthening academic foundational skills, and other basic life skills, including but not limited to Internet safety and job exploration when appropriate.
Students are assessed in this course based on the goals specific to their Individual Education Plan (IEP). Updated IEPs will be coming to parents early in the new school year. Parents are encouraged to be a part of the process by attending an IEP review once a draft IEP has been written.
